About Derrick McKey

Derrick McKey, born on October 10, 1966, in Meridian, Mississippi, is a retired NBA basketball player renowned for his versatility and defensive prowess. Standing at 6 feet 10 inches, McKey played both small forward and power forward positions during his 15-season NBA career.

McKey's basketball journey began at Meridian High School, where he excelled in both basketball and baseball. He continued his athletic career at the University of Alabama from 1984 to 1987, earning accolades such as SEC Player of the Year and Second Team All-American honors in 1987. That same year, he was selected ninth overall in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics.

Throughout his NBA tenure, McKey played for the Seattle SuperSonics (1987–1993), Indiana Pacers (1993–2001), and Philadelphia 76ers (2001–2002). He was known for his defensive capabilities, earning two NBA All-Defensive Second Team selections. McKey concluded his professional career with over 10,000 points, 4,000 rebounds, and 2,000 assists.

Beyond his on-court achievements, McKey has been actively involved in community outreach, particularly focusing on initiatives that support underprivileged children in his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi. His dedication to both the sport and his community continues to inspire many.
